    ... "Methinks I have as much of Heaven as I can hold." These were the last words of the Rev. John MacGowan, whose works including his "Shaver" and "Dialogue of Devils", have been published in two octavo volumes, and who died in London in the year 1780 ... John MacGowan was a native of Edinburg and had been intended for the Presbyterian ministry, but at the age of 19 he joined the rebel army of the Pretender ; fought at Culloden, then retired to Durham, but afterwards settled at Stohton. He was converted to God by the agency of John Urtank, a zealous local preacher among the Methodists of that day, and for a time he stood for the truth as then preached by Wesley, but MacGowan was a Calvinist and became the minister of Devonshire Square Chapel, London. ...

    John Macgowan, son of James Macgowan and Elizabeth, his wife, was born October 23, 1726, and married to Esther Rigby, daughter of James and Esther Rigby, of St. Helen's in Lancanshire, on August 18th, 1766 [sic], in the parish Church of Warrington. ...

    ... John Macgowan, Sr., departed this life the 25th day of November, 1780, leaving his wife and four children, James, John, Peter and Ebenezer surviving him.
