Member of one of the largest Irish land-owning families of the late 19th century. Had a distinguished military career, then served as High Sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant of Monaghan. Educated at Eton and University of Cambridge. Commissioned a Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards. He served for many years in the British Army and participated in the Anglo-Egyptian War, serving with distiction at the Battle of Tel el Kebir in 1882. He also served in South Africa during the Boer War. Became honourary Colonel of the 5th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, and in 1915 Lieutenant-Colonel and commanding officer of the 12th Reserve Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Just before Irish independence in 1922, he was appointed Lieutenant of County Monaghan (1921), thus becoming the last Lieutentant of the county. Though not an advocate of Irish independence during the Anglo-Irish War, he was respected by both sides and after independence became a supporter of the newly-formed Irish Free State.
