Henry moved briefly into Oskaloosa in 1876. In 1877, he moved from Oskaloosa to Indianapolis, Iowa. In 1880, he moved to What Cheer, where he operated a grocery business; it burned c.1890. He moved back to Oskaloosa in 1891 and resumed the grocery business in partnership with his son-in-law, Fred Wheeler, as "Leathers & Wheeler".

    HENRY LEATHERS DEAD
    Former Business Man and Well Known Citizen Passes Away.
        John Henry Leathers, a retired business man of the city, and a well known citizen, died at his home, No. 301 North C Street, at two o'clock Saturday afternoon. While he had been ill for some time past, the end came suddenly and unexpectedly and the announcement is a surprise and a shock to the many friends.
        The deceased was stricken with paralysis during the month of September, 1905, since which time he has been practically helpless. He partially recovered but needed constant attention. He was better and worse by periods until recently, when a decline was noted. Another stroke came Saturday afternoon, resulting in convulsions. Death came to relieve the sufferer about twenty-four hours later.
        Funeral from the Christian church at two-thirty o'clock Tuesday afternoon, March 5, and interment in forest cemetery.
        J. H. Leathers, or Henry Leathers, as he was known to Oskaloosa people, was a native of Indiana. He was born near Indianapolis July 4, 1836, and was 70 years, 7 months and 29 days of age at the time of his death. He came to Iowa when about twelve years of age with his father, Sanford Leathers, and settled on a farm that was entered by the parent at Lanchester near Rose Hill. Mr. Leathers retained his old home place to the day of his death. He came to Oskaloosa for a brief residence in 1876, and then removed to Indianapolis [Iowa] and from there went to What Cheer in 1880 where he was in business and became president of a bank. He returned to Oskaloosa in 1891 and re-entered business here, the firm being known as Leathers & Wheeler. This firm continued a number of years.
        Mr. Leathers was married at Oskaloosa, August 19, 1860, to Miss Margaret Mattox, and to this union two daughters were born, Cordelia Myers, who passed away in 1895, and Adda Wheeler, wife of Fred Wheeler, who has resided at the parents' home in this city. The deceased is survived by the widow, one daughter, granddaughter, Cordelia Myers, and four brothers, Cyrus, of Fairfield, G. W. and Jefferson, of What Cheer, and James, of Searsboro.
        Henry Leathers was a thoroughly good man. He was quiet and undemonstrative in his manner and his disposition, and yet he was an aggressive business man, far-sighted and industrious. He was above all a home man and was devoted to the family with which he surrounded himself as a model and modern home. He was a keen observer and took lively interest in the general affairs of the day. He was liked by all who knew him and he leaves behind him the example of a worthy life well spent.
        He has been a member of the Christian church since 1876 and was associated with the local organization.
