Biography

John Leatherman is listed among non-jurors (persons who failed or refused to take an oath of allegiance to the new state) in early colonial tax listings for Rowan County NC the date was 8 Aug 1778. He was subject to four fold tax for this very reason.

It also seems that he was appointed overseer of the road from

Reedy Creek to the Surrey County line. He owned land in Rowan County in 1789. The tax listings of Rowan County for both 1787 and 1789 list him as John Letterman.

The 1790 Rowan County census shows John Latherman 1 male 16 years

and older, 4 males under 16, 1 female. Translated this means
John and wife had 4 boys between 0-16 years old. He moved from

Rowan County into Rutherford County sometime before 1800, purchased land there then sold that land to Aboslum Autrey (see deed 12-14/45/1800 Rutherford County deed book). He then moved northwestward into Burke and Buncombe Counties probably the Toe River Valley area. The 1800 Burke County NC census shows him with 1 male 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male

45+ and 1 female 45+. The 1810 Buncombe County NC census shows
him with 2 males 10-16, 1 male over 45, and 1 female over 45.
Buncombe County encompassed a large portion of what is now

Yancey County. All the territory west of Crabtree Creek and south of the Toe River was Buncombe County from about 1791 until about 1833. The territory east of Crabtree Creek and north of the Toe was Burke County

Research Notes

Surname
The records for John and his family appear to indiscriminately swap "Leatherman" and "Letterman", with "Leatherman" used in the earlier years and "Letterman" used in the latter years. We have not yet found any definitive reason for this change. [ Stuart Bechman 19:27, 26 November 2016 (EST)]
