JOHN KELSEY ((???)14, Mark2, William1), probably a grandson of Mark Kelsey and Rebecca Hoskins, by a son whose name is not known, was born in 1694 or 1695, possibly at Windsor; was at Harvard, Mass., from before 1740 to about 1770, removed to Shirley, Mass., about 1770; died there Nov. 1, 1780, "aged 85 years," according to gravestone record at that place. He married, about 1740, MARTHA MCFARLAND, born about 1717; died Jan. 22, 1774, "aged 57 years," at Shirley, Mass., and is buried there. Children: 3 (KELSEY), one son and two daughters, born at Harvard, Mass. *301 i JOHN, born June 3, 1743; died Nov. 3, 1822. 302 ii MARTHA, born (???); married Nov. 24, 1770, at Shirley, Mass., GEORGE CONN, of Harvard, Mass. 303 iii BETSY, born (???); died Mar. 21, 1839; married (1) Apr. 4, 1778, PELEG CROCKER, of Harvard, Mass.; (2) Dec. 16, 1790, JAMES HILL, of Stoneham, Mass. John81 Kelsey of Shirley, Mass., is said to have been a son of Mark2 Kelsey and his second wife, Abigail ((???)) Atwood, but there are no proofs to substantiate this, and as Abigail (Atwood) Kelsey must have been over 45 years of age at the time John81 was born, it seems more reasonable to presume that he was a grandson of Mark2 and his first wife by a son whose name is not known. He was in Harvard, Mass., before 1740, where he was probably married, and where his children were born, although we find date of birth of his son, John301, only, recorded. He removed to Shirley, Mass., "sometime before the outbreak of the Revolution," no doubt, about 1770, as his son John and eldest daughter Martha were both married there in that year. The statement is made that he was one of the petitioners that the town of Shirley, Mass., might be separated from Groton, Mass., in 1747, but whether he was then a resident of Shirley, or still living at Harvard, Mass., which was closely connected with Shirley, does not appear. He and his wife are both buried in the Shirley, Mass., Cemetery, their gravestones being in the most conspicuous corner of the yard, fronting on the public square. The records of their deaths, with ages, are taken from the gravestones. We have no record of the settlement of estates of either John Kelsey or his wife, Martha.
