- Source:Jewett, Frederic Clarke. History and Genealogy of the Jewetts of America appears to have gotten really confused working with this John.
Under the children of John Jewett and Elizabeth Cummings, p. 960, is given: "John, born Sept. 12, 1672-3; married Elizabeth Reyner." On the next page: "John Jewett (John9617), was born in Ipswich, Mass., Oct. 6, 1672. (On County records he is called Samuel.) He married Nov. 28, 1700, Elizabeth Reyner, daughter of Jackin and Elizabeth (Denison) Reyner. She died Oct. 17, 1729. He died Nov. 8, 1736."
The two birthdates for John are different. The second tells us it is under the name Samuel, which is how it is found in Ipswich VRs, but the second date is actually the baptism found in the Rowley VRs.
The death date given for John, 8 Nov 1736, is found in Rowley for "John, s. John". It would appear that this death date is for the "John, s. John" bp. 15 Feb 1736, i.e., for a different John Jewett. The death date on this page, 8 May 1741, is found in Rowley and is simply for John Jewet with no identification. There is also a death date for "---, s. John, dropsy" on 14 May 1741. (In June 1741 Martha Jewett petitioned that Jeremiah Hobson be administrator of her husband John Jewett Jr. and also of her father-in-law John Jewett. 22 Jun 1741 a single warrant was issued to appraise the estate of both. Real estate divided between Elizabeth and Sarah, daughter of deceased son John, and Elizabeth Perley wife of David Perly, only daughter of father.) It is pretty clear they both died about the same time. Perhaps 8 May is the father and 14 May is the son. But that is far from clear.
The death date given for the wife is 17 Oct 1729, but what we find in Rowley VRs for "Elizebeth, w. John" is 17 Oct 1723 and 18 May 1730. Presumably, he meant the first.
