John Jay, son of John and Elizabeth (Pugh) Jay was born in Newberry County, S.C. 2.27.1782; died in Wayne Co. Ind. 9.1.184?.
Mary Steddom, daughter of Henry and Martha (Pearson) Steddom was born in " " " 9.12.1784 ; " " " 8. 17. 1843.
John Jay and Mary Steddom were married at Miami Meeting of Friends, Waynesville, Warren Co. Ohio 12.3.1807.
They resided in Warren County, Ohio, where all their children were born, until 1824 when they removed and
settled in Wayne County, Ind. on a farm one mile west of New Paris, Ohio and adjoining the Ohio state line where they both died. They were members of Sanzone Meeting of Friends, a preparative of Whitewater Monthly Meeting, Richmond.
Their children were:
1. Martha Jay born 9.25.1808 ; married 2.23.1826 Joseph Hill, son of Benjamin & Mary ; died 8.14.1847 ; parents of three children.
2. Henry Jay born 8.31.1813 ; died 7.26.1891 ;
-- married 1st about 1834 Leah Nicholson, parents of two children;
-- married 2nd 3.8.1838 Sarah Strawbridge dau of Joseph & Elizabeth, parents of four children;
-- married 3rd 8.31.1848 Priscilla Reed, dau of John & Mary (Grave) Reed, parents of two children;
-- married 4th 1836 Alice Hollingsworth dau of Joseph & Sally (Fund) Hollingsworth, parents of three children.
3. John Jay born 11.3.1818; died 12.6.1831. His death was occasioned by the kick of a horse.
4. Walter Denny Jay born 6.16.1823; marrried 2.18.1847 Rebecca Clawson dau of Amos & Malinda. Parents of 7 children. Died 5.5.1882.
The above four childred all died in Wayne County Indiana. John and Elizabeth (Pugh) Jay, parents of John Jay were born in Frederick county, Virginia, near Manchester. They removed with their parents to Newberry county, South Carolina about 1770 and were married there at Bush River meeting of Friends 8.4.1773. They were parents of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters. All of whom married and had families. They emigrated to Ohio about 1802 with all their children, each of them married. They both died in Miami County, Ohio. John born 1752; died 1829 aged near 77. Elizabeth b 1758; d 1821 aged near 66.
