John Jacox, 95, former mayor, assessor of Alfred John W. Jacox had a lifelong business, professional and personal attachment to the village and town of Alfred in Allegany County. He was: Village mayor for 13 years. Town assessor for 17 years. Member of the village board for 39 years. Four of his five children graduated from Alfred University, where he was a member of the board of trustees. Mr. Jacox died Tuesday at the age of 95 at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. He had been living in Alfred.
He operated the Jacox Grocery in Alfred for 27 years, was mayor from 1954 to 1967, assessor from 1954 to 1971, and member of the village board from 1928 to 1967. Mr. Jacox's first wife, Ruby, died in 1963. He married Catharine Shaw Stillman 16 years ago. Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters: Norma Stoneham of Rochester, Marion Minnick and Betty Crafts, both of Warsaw, Wyoming County, and Mrs. Gene Roy of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and a son. Dr. Ralph F. Jacox of Honeoye Falls.
