John Hutchinson was born in 1847 at Jarrow in County Durham, son of Ann Hutchinson, formerly Veal, and her husband Robert Hutchinson, a paper maker. John's parents were both from Richmond in Yorkshire, and after his birth the family moved back to Richmond where their next child was born the following year. They then moved again to Sunderland, where John appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings.

In 1859, when John was twelve years old, his mother Ann died. The following year his father married again. The 1861 census finds John living with his father and stepmother in Sunderland. John has yet to be researched after 1861.
