Quoted from S1. "John Hunter, son of Robert Hunter and Phoebe Dyer, born November 27, 1795 in Buncombe County, North Carolina, died April 11, 1869 in Lawrence County, Indiana and is buried at the Gilgal Cemetery. Married, Dec. 31, 1818 in Lawrence County, Indiana to MARRY (POLLY) JOHNSON, born May 7, 1801, probably in Kentucky, died April 26, 1896 in Lawrence County, Indiana and is buried at the Gilgal Cemetery beside her husband.

John's uncle, John Hunter, had left his nephew, John Hunter, some property, which added to what the new John Hunter had saved, built the home on the terrace near the banks of the Leatherwood Creek, not far distant to the south from where his father had settled. A lot house mansion in those days, with great hand carved mantels over the fireplaces. It was here that the young married couple started life, and made their home, which stood for more than one hundred years and was widely known as the "Father John Hunter Home." Across the creek from the home, was a fine limestone spring. There John Hunter built a distillery which Lawrence County's old notes says was, "well known good whiskey," which, "sold readily in Louisville." Eastward up the creek, John Hunter and his son Robert, built a mill dam to reservoir water to run the grist and saw mill which they also erected. This mill continued in operation until sometime in the 1880's, sometime after the father and son builders had passed on.
