John Hunt was a churchwarden at Newbury in 1583, 1594, 1595, and 1596. John Hunt Sr. was mayor in 1617. On 10 October 1608 he was listed in the survey of the manor of Newbury. John Hunt, Christopher Grant and Christopher Walker were among the first 24 Capital Burgesses of Newbury chosen under the charter granting the government of the Borough of Newbury by Queen Elizabeth in 1596.

    On 6 April 1627 the administration of the estate of John Hunt the elder of Newbury was granted to his relict Emme.  The inventory, taken the day before, totaled Ð16 4s. 2d.  It included Ð10 in clothing, the lease of housing at West Mylles and two cottages in Grinham Lane, Newbury.
