    John Howland.

["The stone is broken off at the base and is in very poor condition." That it says "John Howland" and contains the work February can be seen, but little else. Note also that the memorial page attributes this stone and death date to the wrong person! The John Howland of Dartmouth died in Dartmouth (inventory dated 4 Nov 1749, see Bristol Probate 13646).]

Will of "John Howland being at present week in body", dated 8 Feb 1737/8, proved 20 Feb 1737[/38], names wife Mary [reserving "room & fire wood for my two Daughters Mary and Joanna so long as they live single"]; son John; son Job [under 21]; daughter Hannah. Wife Mary to be executrix.

  4. Source:Otis, Amos. Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families, p. 2:52, gives the following list of marriages: "1st, Mary Lothrop, Sept. 8, 1697, (the record says James, but there being no James Howland I think John was intended.) 2d, Yet Mercy Shove, (tho' record says Josiah), Nov. 29, 1709; 3d, Mary Crocker, June 18, 1709." Just from casual inspection, one is forced to question this, because he depends on two records being misrecorded, he implies a eight year gap between marriage and first child, and he shows two marriages in 1709. It turns very little in this is correct.

Regarding the first marriage, there is a James Howland. He lived in Plymouth and in 1699, two years after this marriage, he and wife Mary begin having children. So the marriage record, without needing any speculative corrections, almost certainly belongs to them. The marriage of John Howland is probably closer to the birth of their first child in 1705. That child, George, named one of his sons Shove, which would be incredibly odd if the maiden name of his mother turned out to be anything other than Shove (the name not being found in his wife's family). And George's name suggests George's mother, John Howland's first wife, might be a daughter of George Shove. The Barnstable records do not name the mother of John Howland's children, but Source:Howland, Charles Roscoe. Brief Genealogical and Biographical Record of Charles Roscoe Howland, Brothers and Forebears, p. 251, cites a deed from Taunton North Purchase and Proprietors Records, Vol. 5, p. 20, which mentions "Joannah the wife of John Howland whose maiden name was Shove".

The second marriage in 1709 is shown to actually be Josiah, as the record says, who married Joanna Shove's sister Yetmercy. See her page for details.

The third marriage merely suffers from a typo, the date given being mistranscribed. The marriage record in the Barnstable records gives the date as 18 Jun 1719.

Note: Otis also gets confused dealing with daughters Hannah and Joannah, leading him to assume one daughter Hannah died and another daughter Hannah was born in 1715, while Joanna's birth is not given, apparently unknown. The birth record in 1715 says "Joannah" so it appears there was only one daughter Hannah. Their marriages appear mixed up, as well, more research is needed.
