Obituary BOY SHOT AT PARK EXPIRES---Police Probe Mystery of Shooting--No Witnesses Found --

Police are endeavering to discover just how John Hoover, aged 19, received the bullet in his head at the shooting gallery in Idora park at 11 p.m. Saturday. The injury resulted in his death at City hospital at 4:15 a.m. Sunday.
There were no witnesses to the tragedy. A small, boy, whose name police have been unable to learn, told the persons who were first on the scene that he had heard the shot and saw young Hoover fall, but that he had seen no one engaged in shooting, nor did he see any person in the vicinity of the gallery. The injured boy was carried to the the photograph gallery conducted by his father, C.D. Hoover, and was then rushed to City hospital by his brother, Paul Hoover. He was placed on the operating table where it was found that the bullet, a 22-calibre, had entered the right ear, splitting into three pieces, one of which had penetrated the skull entering the brain. It was impossible to operate at the time and he was placed in a ward where he died.
On the way to the hospital he is alleged to have made the statement that someone had shot him and the attending physician is authority for the statement that it would be difficult for a person to inflict upon himself the kind of wound received by young Hoover.
Several theories are advanced. One is to the effect that the young man, who was in charge of the shooting gallery at Idora park, was cleaning his guns preparatory to closing up, and that one of the guns jammed and the shell exploded. A second theory is to the effect that a customer was preparing to shoot at a target, accidentally pulled the trigger, and when he saw that he had shot Hoover, disappeared around the corner of the building before anyone was aware that a tragedy had occurred.
John Myrle Hoover was born in thie city June 12, 1901, the son of Charles D. and Susan Lytle Hoover. He had lived in Youngstown all his life and had been employed as a steel worker at the plant of Carnegie Steel Co. He resided at 1 Pierce avenue. He was a member of Trinity M.E. church.
Surviving with his parents are the following brothers and sisters: Paul C. Hoover, Mrs. D.A. Morris, Mrs. Porte Hall, Helen M. Hoover and Elizabeth May Hoover, all of this city. Mr. Hoover was a young man of sterling integrity and was popular among a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. Keen regret is felt at his death.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the residence with Rev. Carson Prese officiating, assisted by Rev. Thompson. Interment will be made in the Cornersburg cemetery.
