Notes about: The Hobson Family’s- Obscurity Plantation of Cumberland County Virginia
Obscurity is located about 50 miles west of Richmond, just west of the modern day border between Powhatan and Cumberland Counties in Virginia. U.S. Route 60 runs thru the northern portion of the old plantation.
Also of note: The Hobson families co-operated a mill on Deep Creek (which flows into the James River) between Obscurity Plantation and William Hobson’s land. (See William Hobson’s will).

He traveled thru Cumberland County, Virginia preaching during 1807, 1808 and 1813.
June 1807, “6th Bold Springs, 10 miles. Had a powerful time among Christians, Stayed at Jack Hobson’s. ”
31 Dec 1807, “…I went to John Hobson’s m. ten miles and had a prayer meeting at Bold Spring. Old Methodists and sound dear kinde people who have braved the storm for over 20 years and I hope will be shining lights in a benighted world until death. Amen I love them.”
3 Jan 1808, “Sunday to Bold Springs seven miles. I tried to preach on Acts25:6 and 7, and some of Satan’s Children interrupted us by throwing stones on the house during time of my preaching. ---- I went to Papa and Mama Hobson’s, dear kind affectionate Method(ists) and spent the evening in peace with sister Dow, talking and singing and praying and crying and God was with us”. “Tues 17th (Nov 1813) went to bro Hobson (John M) 24v miles and found the family much dejected in consequence of the death of William Hobson. Wed 18th A crowd attended & I preached William Hobson’s funeral on Job 21:15, had common liberty & believe from solemnity & tears of the people that good was done but found religion at a low ebb in that county”.
