"Died 3/22/1874 in Greene Twp., Clinton Co., PA" according to Steve Zimmerman.

There is a John Herman in St. Peter's (Hoffman's) Church records born February 20, 1797 to George and Catharina Herman with Michael Salatin and wife Christina as sponsors.

Also in St. Peter's (Hoffman's) records, Johannes Herman born August 23, 1797 to Johannes and A. Maria Herman with sponsors Isaac Huller and wife Catharina.

I asked a volunteer to do a cemetery look-up and this is the response:

"There is a John Harman, who died 3/22/1874 and it says he died in his 78th year. He is in Section 1, Row 9, stone 20, next to him is another John with a birth date of 1793 and died 1871. This is in Section 1 Row 9, stone 21. His wife Lavina is next to him as stone 22. She died 9/12/1902 and she was 78 yrs, 5 mo, 14 days. Her stone says "Our Mother". There are several other Harman's in the same row, but listed as stone #32, 33 and 34.

There is also a John H. Herman with an "e" b. 11/4/1890 & d. 2/15/1923. I suspect you are really looking for Harman. with and "a".

"I'll tell you the story of the 2 headstones. One is the original and it was wearing away to the point that it won't be readable much longer. When I transcribed the cemetery in the 90's sometime I was still able to read 1874 as his death date. Another Herman researcher photographed it and read it as 1871. Not until the disagreement came up did she entertain the thought of the 4 instead of the 1.

Anyway, she talked her leg of the family into chipping in and paying for a new stone to be laid so John would always be remembered. She used 1871 as the death date. Now it's in stone! And incorrect!

It was quite a discussion we had on that death date but probate records clearly give his death as 1874. (another good reason to search for all available records before accepting data as the truth)

That death date is extremely important in this case because it's the only way that his parentage will be determined. There are 3 John Harmans that are possibilities and the death date helps to determine that."
