Joined Presbyterian Church in Scotland. Immigrated to Canada 1 May 1855. At age 20, came to U.S.A. in 1860 and settled in Lexington, IL.

Became a US citizen by joining/enlisting in Company K 145 Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Served 90 days in 1864 as a 1st Sargeant. John served in Civil War & gained his U.S. citizenship & 80 acres in IL.

1875 moved to Kansas. Occupation: carpenter & stockman.

Died of internal injuries after falling off new barn roof while building. Presbyterian.
