[reference in Mary Ann Beasley's diary[1839] - possibly this was a Manning House which he was proud to have erected himself, even at the expense of knocking the tip off his finger. 1842 - Mt. Barker, SA [sketched by Governor Gawler] 1878 - Magill, SA. Religion: Christian - Religious Society of Friends Anglican by adoption in SA. Migration: With his wife and family to South Australia in 1837. Occupation: Currier. Merchant - in partnership with hisbrother-in-law. Failed in the South Australian depression of1841. had a contract for supplying the Buffalo with water usingbullocks and drays he had bought in Launceston - query: did hego to Tasmania or were they brought from England (regulationsfor migrants were that ships left London). Farmer - known tohave had a property at Mount Barker in the early 1840's - adrawing exists. ". . . the Bugle Ranges - where Barton Hack'sbullock Bugle, a judge of good country, had made a habit ofstraying in search of sweeter grass, and so given his name tothe region." [There are other stories to account for the name!] Notes: It becomes obvious from 'A Exelent Coliney' that the preferred name in South Australia was Barton Hack - after 1843 nearly all references are so couched.
