John Gregory's origins have yet to be established. His only confirmed sighting is on 30th December 1826, when he married a widow called Elizabeth Ward, formerly Filby, at St Pancras in the northern suburbs of London. There were many people called John Gregory living in the London area at the time, making it hard to tell what became of him. By 1841 Elizabeth was living in Barnet with two of her sons from her first marriage. When Elizabeth died in 1849 she was described as a widow.
