John Gray was the son of Alexander Gray, d. 1796, and Elizabeth Fitzhugh Gray. He married Anney Price (1767-1838) about 1784-85. She was the son of John Price. His will was probated in Halifax County on May 12, 1772. Ann (Anney) was the youngest of the 10 children mentioned in his will and would have been 5 years old at the time of her father's death.
On 20 Jul 1686, John Gray bought 150 acres adjoining his father's land on the South Dan River. It was on this farm in Virginia that John and Anney's children were born.
John sold his land and in Oct 1806 they move westward to Middle Tennessee (Williamson County). It is believed tat John's brother, Alexander Gray Jr. moved to Tennessee about this same time.
John purchased land in 1810, 1814, 1816, 1829, 1830 and 1835. In the 1814 land purchase was property on the Little Harpeth River.
Two of John and Anney's sons, John and Henry T. enlisted in the War of 1812.
John and Anney spent more than 30 years together after moving to Williamson County. They died a week apart in June of 1838; he was 78 and she was 71. They were buried side by side in the "stonewall encirlced family cemetery situated on the farm near Brentwood, Tennessee." The acreage is still known as the "Old John Gray Place, and was also owned by the Puryear family.
