Notes for JOHN GEORGE, from Mary Jo Martin (Jomartin1@@worldnet.att.net): John George purchased 103 acres of land from Azariah and Eliza Higgins for $279 in 1835. John and his wife, Sally Vest George sold the property and house to Sarah's uncle, Thomas Vest in 1840 for $1200. In April or May of 2000, Joan Bega of Grass Valley, CA was in the County Clerk's Office in Burlington, Boone Co.., KY copying deeds and while there she met the Historic Preservation Planner of the Boone County Planning Commission. She had recently submitted the required application and justification, with local and state approvals, to Washington, DC to have the "George-Vest House" designated a Historical Landmark. She felt she would hear from Washington very soon. The "house" is in pretty bad shape, but the current owner is slowly refurbishing it without changing any of the beautiful historic features. She feels it will take her about 5 years to complete the project. The original "cooking" fireplace with original pot swing are intact in the kitchen. In fact, most of the interior is unaltered. According to the Historic Preservation Planner, they have determined that John and Sarah George started with a small house and that Thomas and Elizabeth Vest added to it and made it very grand.
