Came to America in General Wolfe's army to fight the colonists early in the Rev. War. Toward the end of the war he deserted in the area of upper South Carolina because he thought himself mistreated by his commanders. He wandered into NC, served a few months in the NC militia actually fighting against the English, then settled down in Rutherford County. Info from Robert David Gasperson. John and Elizabeth apparently drifter apart after the turn of the century. At the time of Elizabeth's death, John was living in East Tennessee where he filed for his Rev. War pension and the pension was eventually paid to a widow (probably remarried again). Info from Robert David Gasperson

The Revolutionary War records of North Carolina contain the following: Descriptions of Soldiers, 1778-1782, from Militia Returns, of Rutherford County 1782: John Gasperson, age 30 “no Traid Born in the Old Country,” 18 months men drafted to fill the Contl. Battallion of State. (NC., p. 751).

THIS INDENTURE made this 2nd day of Jan. 1797 between John Gaspinson and Elizabeth his wife of county of Rutherford and State of N.C. . . . to Jonathan Hampton of county . . . for 40 pounds, my right and title to three different tracts of land in county on Camp . . . Second Broad River and other branches of sd. river including plantation where I now live, containing in whole 352 tracts of 100 acres each and the other one 150 [Read: 350 acres, 2 tracts of 100 acres each and the other one 150 (acres)j sd. tracts originally granted THOMAS BARNET dec’d. being in . . . of sd. barnet entered in Entry Office . . . which land sd. John Gaspison came possessed of in conveyance of a marriage contract with aforesaid Elizabeth the then widow of sd. Thomas Barnett, the original patentee of sd. land I the sd. John Gaspison have . . . sold all that part and parcel of aforesaid tracts of land that I am Husband of sd. Elizabeth it being her dower her natural life including improvements or such a part as shall be alledged to her by a jury as the Law in those eases directs which lands (viz) one third of above described land with all the ap- perlinaces [appurtenances], . . . I. the sd. John Gaspison and by virtue of these presents warrant and defend said premises from himself and his heirs and executors and administrators or and all other persons claiming any part or parcel of aforesaid Dower and sd.
