After a year’s illness patiently borne, there passed peacefully away on September 5, a well known farmer and horseman of Mara, in the person of John Fox. Deceased was born on July 20, 1849, and was a son of the late John Fox. He was foe almost half a century treasurer of Mara Township, succeeding his father. For a quarter century he was Justice of the Peace for Mara. Of a kindly and genial disposition he had a wide circle of friends who regret his passing.
He was interested in all things pertaining to the welfare of the community and was a Roman Catholic in religion, and a Liberal in politics, being a past Vice president of the North Ontario Liberal Association.
The funeral on Friday , September 8, to St. Columbkill’s (sic) R.C. church, was in charge of Orillia Council Knights of Columbus, of which deceased was a member. Solemn mass for the dead was chanted by the pastor Rev. P.J. Flanagan, assisted by Rev. E.J. McCorkell. C.S.B., Toronto. Rev. Jas. Clair, Uptergrove, and Rev. K.E. Morrow, Brechin. The large number of friends who attended the funeral was a silent testimony to the sterling qualities of Mr. Fox in the esteem of his fellow citizens. The pallbearers were brother Knights, Dan J. Mulvihill, John Hayes, Geo. J. O’Connell, Thos. P. Hart, M. Teefy Mulchahy and John Smith.
Left to morn the loss of a loving husband and father are the widow, two sons and four daughters. They were all present at the funeral and are: Mrs. Ed. P. Reilley, Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. (Dr.) H.W. Feldhans, Copper Cliff; Robert G. Fox, V.S. Winnipeg; Thomas J., Katherine and Margery at home. Also surviving is a brother, Joseph Fox, of Mara, and three (sic) sisters.
