JOHN THOMAS DUFF was born and spent the early years of his life in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He lived in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana with his wife after they were married in 1845.

In 1840 John was living in Northern Township, Jefferson County, Kentucky.

John later moved to Corydon, Harrison County, Indiana and ran a store with his brother, Noel Banks Duff.

John later moved back to New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana; then Bloomington, Illinois; Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana; Darwin, Clark County, Illinois; back to Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana; and then Upper Alton, Madison County, Illinois.

In 1850 John was living with his family in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana.

In 1857 and 1858, John was involved with Major G W Long in a survey of the Illinois River and the rapids at Keokuk, Iowa.

In 1860 John was living with his family in Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois. The value of his real estate was $4,000.00 and his personal property was $7,000.00.

While living in Litchfield, Illinois, John was a merchant.

John volunteered to serve in the War between the States. He served with Federal forces. He enlisted as a sergeant in Company D, 7th Illinois, Infantry in Springfield, Illinois on April 16, 1861. He was discharged from the army on April 25, 1862. (Source: Adjutant General's Report - Illinois, Volume 1: 1861 - 1866, Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men from 7th to 15th Regiment) He re-enlisted in the Mississippi Marine Brigade (Union) under Commodore Andrew H. Foote who commanded a Gunboat Flotilla on the Mississippi River. He served as 1st and 3rd Master on the U.S.S. Benton (Foote's flagship), the Maria Denning and others. He was later discharged.

John is buried in Upper Alton Cemetery, Alton, Illinois.
