John CRAIG, merchant in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, married Margaret MAXWELL (family letters). According to a disposition made in the presence of John Colin Dunlop in 1784, John owned land at Ferguslie (NW of the centre of Paisley, Renfrewshire) which had been bought from William Alexander, a house at Sneddon and land at the north end of the New or High Church in Paisley. An authorised, stamped and sealed copy of the disposition made in 1818 exists. According to “A directory of Landownership in Scotland c. 1770” a Mr. Craig owned “part Gallowhill”, valued at 40 pounds. . John Colin Dunlop (d. 26jan1842 unmarried), sheriff of Renfrewshire, was a cousin of George Dunlop (6feb1777-6dec1852) (stirnet website). References
