    "John (Coltman), who was (according to Hall Ancestry, 167, and Lechford's Note Book, 280) son of Thomas, blacksmith of Newton Harcoate, Weston, Leicestershire, England, first appears in the Conn. Colony abt. 1645; his homestead lot rec. in Weth., 26 March 1647; appears to have been a servant, or in some way employed, in the family of Mr. Leonard Chester; and when afterward (1653,) he rec'd a gt. of ld. from the Town, it was coupled with the condition that he should build a house thereon and live in it for seven yrs, 'he being so changeable, ever since he was his own man.' In 1648 he had become part owner of the Chester Mill (of wh. prob. he had previously been the manager); and in Nov. 1668 was given, by the Town, a piece of ld. near to the Mill; he was the Town schoolmaster in 1666-7 and for some yrs. after. His services to the Chester fam. seem to have been pleasantly recognized in Mrs. Leonard Chester's (then widow of Hon. Rich'd Russell, of Charlestown, Mass., will in 1688. by a gift to this servant of nearly fifty yrs. before. … He is said to have removed to Branford, Connecticut. He m. 21 (one record says 'about the 24th') Sept. 1667, Mary _____, who, after Mr. Coltman’s dth. (which was abt. 1696 [no, see below re. Inventory]─some say 1688 or '89), married (2) _____. Sherman. Mr. Coltman's estate valued at £142."

    Coaltman, John. 1st September 1691. To the Honoured Court: Whereas, there was formerly an Inventory of the moveable Estate of John Coaltman, late of Wethersfield, Deceased, taken, and the land that belonged to the Estate of the said John Coaltman left out, it being then practiced and a custome not to mention land in Inventories, but since the Lawes provided otherwise, and that the orphans may know where to seek their owne in time to come, it is by the relict of the said John Coaltman desired that the land should also be Inventoried, which is as followeth as the Law requires: The House, Orchard & three and a half acres of the Home lott on the north side, and three and half acres on the south side the Home lot, & two acres in the Great Meadow. Invt. £110-00-00. Apprised by John Chester & James Treat.
