John was born and raised with a sister and three brothers on a farm in Liberty, a town in the Catskill Mountains of New York. His father, a stone artisan, had developed silicosis, was no longer able to practice his trade full time, and moved to the country for his health (never the less, he passed away in 1912).

After graduating high school in Liberty, John moved in with his Uncle Frank and Aunt Anna (his father's brother and his mother's twin sister)(S6). While working, he studied for the Cooper Union Institute entrance exam. He was tutored in this effort by Brother Bonaventure Thomas who was later President of Manhattan College. He was admitted to Cooper Union and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1925. In 1964 Cooper Union presented John with a Professional Achievement Citation.

Family lore has it the John, a lefty, was quite a pitcher and was offered a contract by the Newark Bears. At that time the Bears were a minor league team at the AA level. He turned the contract down in order to begin his engineering career.

After graduation, John went to work for New York Edison. He would spend 41 years, his whole professional life, at New York Edison and it's successor, Consolidated Edison, eventually rising to become President of the company.
