He was a Confederate soldier and married Addie Taylor after his return from the War. For a few days after their wedding he was extremely ill with pneumonia. He moved his new bride to Arlington, Shelby County, Tennessee where he cleared land adjacent to his sister, Martha (Mattie), and her husband, Dr. Fred Battle. After the death of Addie in 1895, he lived with his younger sons, Fred Battle Claiborne and William Anthony Claiborne, in Bolivar, where Fred owned a dairy farm. He was blind in his last years, and died 1918 shortly after his son, William, was drafted into the army.
