John Chapman married Sarah Ward on the 11 October, 1810 in Floyd County, Kentucky. In all the censuses he lists himself as being born in Virginia about the year 1790. He possibly died 10 November 1878 in Lawrence County, KY. His wife, Sarah Ward, was also born in Virginia around 1791, possibly in Giles County. Her parents are listed as Sarah (Sally) Osborn and James Ward. She possibly died in Pike County, KY on 5 August 1876 At the Louisa Public Library, Louisa, Kentucky I found a copy of the revised edition of the Ward a Genealogical Record of the Wards of the Big Sandy, by Billie Edyth Ward; Baltimore Press, Gateway Press, Inc. 1999. This is what Billie Ward writes about Sarah Ward, wife of Joihn Chapman. Sarah Ward was the older of two reported daughters of Sarah Osborn and James Ward of Virginia. She was born about 1790. She would have been about 13-14 years old when her family moved tot the Big Sandy area. Her marriage was listed in the Floyd County records to John Chapman on the date October 11, 1810. There is a notation that her mother, Sarah Ward Senr, was giving permission for her daughter to marry him. Young Sarah must have been under the age of 21 years old. The permission note was actually written by Silas Wooden, a person who worked as a teacher and local scribe in the area. You find John Chapman, listed as the head of house, and his wife together in the U.S. Federal Censuses for that area of Kentucky from 1820 throught 1870. They lived in the area of Elk Creek which is now part of Martin County, Kentucky. Records show John Chapman owned land on Rockcastle Creek near the present site in Inez, Martin County. There was a land dispute case over the sale of some land. In 1833 testimony for the 'Walcott Case,' John Chapman claimed he sold land to James Ward. James Ward is referred to as James Ward, Jr. Several of the children of John and Sarah owned land and made their homes in the area of Big Elk and Little Elk Creeks (p.402, rev. ed).
