5. Captain John B. Cartmill - born about 1750. Died 1838 in Lafayette County, MO. Married twice; 1st to Anne Skillern about 1769 and 2nd to Sarah Wallace about 1783. John inherited 200 acres in Botetourt County when his father Henry died in 1786. Lived in Botetourt County up to 1811. Left Botetourt County around 1811 at the age of 61, apparently to stay close to his children who had started moving west. Moved first to Kanawah County, WV where his sons David and Henry lived, then to Bedford County, TN in the fall of 1819. Bought 168 acres in Bedford County, TN from son-in-law Robert Wallace September 30th, 1819. Sold his property in Bedford County, TN in 1828 and 1829 and moved with a large family group to Lafayette County, Missouri in the fall of 1829 at the age of 79. John died in Lafayette County, MO in 1838 at the age of 88. Captain John Cartmill left no will but there was a probate of his estate in 1846 and several children can be identified through the probate records.

    John B Cartmill
    BIRTH 1751
    Newlinville, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA
    DEATH 15 Jan 1845 (aged 93–94)
    Lafayette County, Missouri, USA

Capt. John B. Cartmill's father was Henry Cartmill Sr. b. 1716 in Chester Co PA and died at his home in the Purgatory Mts., near Buchanan VA on the James River in 13 Feb 1787 (date when his will was probated). Henry's will was written 4 Sept 1786 and is housed in the Fincastle VA Courthouse. The mother of Henry's children is not known. She may be Mary Anderson; later Henry married Mary Luney/Looney in 1786.

Capt. John's middle name may be Burr or Boyd (the latter based on son William Wallace Cartmill's son (whose name was John Boyd Cartmill).

His siblings are Sarah Elizabeth 1742-1787, Capt. James 1743-1810, Margaret "Peggy" 1744-1786, Elizabeth 1748-1834, Polly 1749-1811, Lieut Thomas 1752-1783, and Lieut. Henry Cartmill Jr. 1754-1840.

Capt. John's first wife was Anna SKILLERN (abt 1745 - 1834) whose parents were William Skillern (abt 1710 Ireland - 1745 VA) and Elizabeth ANDERSON (1710 Ireland - aft 1771 VA)-- they had six known children, including Col. George Skillern, Sarah, Elizabeth, Wm. Preston, Isabel, and Anna Skillern. The family arrived from Ulster to Philadelphia and Orange Co. VA in 1740. It is possible that Anna is Anna Isabel.

Capt John married Anna about 1768 in Botetourt Co VA; their children were: Henry Cartmill 1769-1824 who married Mary Margaret Wallace and Isabella Bogan; Anne Elizabeth Cartmill 1775-1854 married Robert Wallace; Cyntha Ann Cartmill married Samuel Wallace; David Cartmill 1780-1824 married Nancy Temple Morgan; Margaret Peggy Cartmill 1782-1816 married Wm. B. Green, and James Cartmill 1783-1840.

His second wife was Sarah Wallace who he married about 1784 in Botetourt Co VA. Their children were: Mary Polly 1784 - 1864 married Daniel Benj. Gordon; John Cartmill Jr 1785 - ?, William Wallace Cartmill 1789-1845 m Catherine Thornton; Elizabeth 1790-1860 m John S. Slade, and Robert Cartmill 1801-1846 m Delila unk. (I have found no record for a child named Sarah Christena Cartmill Hershman.) I believe her line descends from John Cartmill b. 1712 (brother of Henry Cartmill Sr).

Capt. John served with Virginia's Colonial Militia; records are found with him and his brother James Cartmill, and Robert Stewart; he is found in records of Revolutionary War Soldiers, including his brothers, Lieut. Thomas Cartmill and Lieut Henry Cartmill Jr.

Capt. John moved with his nuclear family to Augusta Co. VA in 1755 (where John Cartmill b.1712 (it is believed to be Henry's father) was located. In 1761 Henry purchased the land previously owned by Robert Renick in the Purgatory Mts of Botetourt County. Robert Renick and his entire family were either killed or captured by Indians from there homestead on that property.

On 13 May 1779 Capt John is noted as a Lieutenant taking an oath of office in court in Botetourt, VA. Capt. John eventually headed a company of Militia during the Revolutionary War.

13 Apr 1780 he is promoted to Captain in Botetourt Co.

His name is found throughout many records with other names from the area; it is important to discern when it is him and when it is his uncle.

In a 1785 enumeration of Botetourt Co VA he is listed under John Cartmill's District, including his father Henry Cartmill, Sr. and brother, Henry Cartmill Jr.

9 Aug 1786 Botetourt Co; he was recommended to the Governor with quite a few others, including George Skillern (brother of his wife, Anna Skillern) as Commissioner of the Peace.

17 Nov 1789 (SW VA) he took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States

He was Sheriff of Boutetourt County 9 January 1793. At this time all sheriffs were constituted and appointed by a commission from the Governor. On 10 Feb 1795 he was appt. as a security in Botetourt Co., along w/ several other men to aid Sheriff James Mason.

About 1810, in order to stay close to family he began moving west; first to Kanawha Co WVA where sons David and Henry lived, then to Bedford Co TN in the fall of 1819 where his daughter, Anne Elizabeth Cartmill Wallace lived; in 1828 and 1829 he sold his property in Bedford and moved with a large family group to Lafayette Co MO in the fall of 1829. In an 1830 Residence record in Lafayette, MO he is listed as between 70 and 80. He died 15 Jan 1845 in Lafayette Co., MO, leaving no Will; his estate was probated in 1846 in which several children are named.

He moved into a frontier area of SW VA as a young child, faced threats from Indians growing up, lived through the French and Indian War, was a Lieut and a Captain in the Revolutionary War with his name noted in several records, with the men under his command; it is known that he participated in the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina and the Battle of Weitzell's Mill in North Carolina; and served as a Sheriff in Botetourt Co VA USA. He continued moving late into his life, moving further West, dying at the age of 94.
