John Capen Died April 5th. 1733, In ye 48th year of his Age. [Age 47, so birth between 6 Apr 1685 and 5 Apr 1686.]
- John's wife's parentage is clearly identified in a deed (Vol. 47, folio 46 front: 10 Apr 1732: John Capen of Dorchester Yeoman & Elisabeth his wife, the s'd Elisabeth Capen being the Daughter of Jon'a Hall late of said Dorchester Yeoman Dec'd & Elizabeth his wife yet Surviving his Widow for £160 to our Brother Richard Hall of s'd Dorchester yeoman sell all rights in estate of our said Father Jonathan Hall "now or after the Death of our s'd Mother Elizabeth Hall whether by the last Will & Testatment of the s'd Jonathan Hall deced or by any other way), and this seems to be the only deed documenting a John who has a wife Elizabeth. There are, however, three John Capens who would have been old enough to marry Elizabeth Hall: son of Bernard and Sarah b. 1686, son of Samuel and Susanna b. 1696, and son of Samuel and Anne b. 1701. The last one can be ruled out, but there is no direct evidence to indicate which of the other two it might have been. Most secondary sources seem hopelessly confused, merely copying older sources who demonstrably were missing key data, and probate files were not used, and still haven't been located. However, it seems likely son of Bernard and Sarah b. 1686 was the one who married Elizabeth Hall for the following circumstantial reasons:
*his eldest son was named Barnard. While many names are shared in all branches of this family, Barnard does not appear in Samuel and Susanna Capen's set of children, so no obvious reason is known why their son should name his child Barnard, while this John would clearly be naming a son after his father. *when this John died in 1733, known to be him by age at death, the children born to John and Elizabeth stop, and no further deeds that can clearly be attributed to him are found. *his widow Elizabeth remarried in 1750, long after 1733, but corresponding roughly to when her eldest son reached legal age to take ownership of the property.
