John Cain was baptised on 26th May 1793 at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, son of Sarah Cain formerly Archer and her husband John Cain.
On the last day of 1814, John married Mary Darby at St Paul's Walden. They went on to have five children baptised there between 1815 and 1827. The children's baptisms each describe John as a labourer and record that the family lived at Whitwell, the main village in the parish of St Paul's Walden. John's father died in 1832.
The 1841 census finds John, Mary, four of their children, son-in-law, and two grandchildren living in Whitwell. At this time John was working as a tanner.
John's mother died in 1844.
The 1851 and 1861 censuses also find John, Mary and a selection of their children and grandchildren living in Whitwell.
Mary died just after the 1861 census. John outlived her by two years. He died at the age of 70, and was buried at St Paul's Walden on 25th June 1863.
