    Monumental Inscription:

    Hic jacet corpus Johannis Byne armig: qui uxorem duxit Elizabetham Bowyer filiam Johannis Bowyer de Camerwell armig: et suscepit ex ea filios quinque filiasque duas et obiit vicesimo primo die Julii 1600 anno aetatis suae 63

    Also, there were four shields of arms:

    In the centre over the entablature are the Arms of Byne: Argent two bars Gules, each charged with three martlets Or.

    In a row below them are:
    firstly, Byne, impaling Paly of ten for Threele;
    secondly, Byne, impaling a bend engrailed Gules for Culpepper;
    thirdly, the arms of Bowyer, impaling those of Draper.

    No will of or letters of administration to John Byne can be discovered, but his Inq. post mortem was taken at Horsham, 16 December 1600, and thereby it was found that he was seised of the manors of Byne and Coodham, alias Storrington, and of one capital messuage, one windmill, one dovehouse and 120 acres of land in Washington, and so seised died 22 (sic) July 1600, and that John Byne, gentleman, was his son and heir, and at the time of his father's death was aged 23 years and was married.

    Although Renshaw states that no will of his can be found, here it is.

    A transcription:

    In the name of god Amen: I John Bynde of the paryshe of Washington in the County of Sussex gent beinge sicke in body but of good and perfect remembrance I thanke my god therefore revokinge and renouncing all former wills do make and ordayne this my last will and Testament in manner and forme followinge, First I bequeath my soule unto allmighty god my maker and redeemer by whose death and passion I hope to be saved, & my body to be buried in the parishe Church of Washington, and as touching all my worldly goods I give & bequeath them as followeth, First I give and bequeath unto my daughter Katherin Binde three hundred poundes to be paid unto her at her day of marriage or with in three yeares after my decease which shall first happen And also I will and bequeath unto my said daughter Katherine twenty markes yerely to be payd unto her by my executor untill the said some of three hundred poundes to be paid unto her, Item I will and bequeath unto Elizabeth my wellbeloved wife all her Chaynes jewells and wearinge apparell with(?) the money as she hath of her owne in her purse or owinge unto her, Allso I give and bequeath unto her all the wodd lyinge in my yeard provided for fuell, & allso all such plate as was given her by her uncle Mr Mathewe Draper of Camberwell & all such plate as she hath bought [...] her cominge to house, & also the use of such and to such houshold stuffe as shall be thought fitt for her to use by the discretion of my overseers for the terme of two yeares next after my decease, Item I give and bequeath unto each of my sonnes James and Edward Fortye shillinges yearely for so many yeares as they shall live to be payd unto them at the Feast of St Michell and thannunciacon of our lady St Marye the Virgin by even porcons out of those my landes called or knowne by the name of [...] in the parish of Storington in the county of Sussex the first payment there of to begin at the feast of St Michell tharchagnel sixe yeares after my decease Item whereas I have given unto my Daughter Norton Fower hundred poundes towardes her preferment in mariage and have payd thereof unto the handes of my brother Edmond Bowyar the some of three hundred and twenty poundes and fower score poundes shallbe payd unto my sayd brother Edmond Boyar of Camberwell Esquire and that my executor shall allso deliver unto him one bill of debt of three hundred & fortie poundes parcell of the said three hundred and twenty poundes within one yeare after my decease all the residue of my goods Cattell Chattels and leases my legacies and debts payd and my funerall discharged, I give and bequeath unto John Bynde my sonne whome I make sole executor of this my last will and Testament provided all wayes and my will and meaninge is that if my said executor doe not enter into a bond of Fower hundred poundes unto my brothers Edmond Bowyar and John Bowyar or the survivors of them for the payment of three hundred poundes unto my daughter Katerin before in this my will, unto her devised within one moneth after my decease That my said sonn John Bynde shall no longer continewe my executor of this my last will and Testament nor receyve any benifitt by any thinge herein unto him devised but from thenceforth my said daughter Katheryne shallbe my sole executor of this my last will and Testament, Item I give unto the poore people of the parishe of Washington Forty shillinges, Item I give to Agnes Jordan my servant twenty shillinges and to every other of my houshold servants tenn shillinges a peece, Item I desyre and make my said brothers Edmond Bowyar and John Bowyar to be overseers of this my last will and Testament In witness whereof I have putto my hand the xxiith day of July in the two and Fortith yeare of the raigne of our soveraigne Lady Elizabeth by the grace of god of England and France and Ireland Queene defender of the faythe etc 1600 John Bynde
