John was a legal adult in York County, Virginia in 1658 when he was nonsuited over a bill of 429 pounds of tobacco. The clerks' record indicates he borrowed a sum in tobacco to plant in 1652, indicating he was born probably in the early 1630s. Because his grandson was not allowed to marry a white woman, but his great-grandchildren did, this suggests that John's father was African. He was free, and thus his mother must have been free.
