(2) 18 Feb 1761 Martha Jewett [sic, this date is apparently the date of intentions in Monson or Hollis, since the marriage is recorded in Rowley in April]. Name: John Brown Place of Death: Hollis Date of Death: May 6th 1770 Age: 43 [birth about 1727] Condition: Married Clerk of: Hollis
- Source:Stearns, Ezra S. Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, p. 4:1557, reports the death date as 6 May 1776, but Source:Worcester, Samuel Thomas. History of the Town of Hollis, New Hampshire gives the same date as the cited record (not surprisingly as they both should be transcripts of the same original). The age of 43 doesn't work well with either date, better with 1770 than 1776, but the 1776 date combined with an age of 53 (off by 10) would come close.
There are several other sources that give the death date of 6 May 1776, and they also seem to all give the marriage date of 18 Feb 1761, despite a recorded marriage in Rowley of 9 April 1761. This tends to suggest all these secondary sources are copies of each other (Source:Stearns, Ezra Scollay. History of Plymouth, New Hampshire would, of course, be expected to give the same information, and so does Source:Musgrove, Richard W. History of the Town of Bristol, Grafton County, New Hampshire). No probate for John Brown has been located yet.
John Brown is a common name, and whereas the death record in Hollis is 1770, the sources that give a death in 1776 indicate John moved to Plymouth, was taxed there as late as 1774. This raises some doubts about the possibility of two John Browns...
