Facts and Events
According to The Owl, Winter 1973/1974, page 4185, published by the Wing Family of America, "Left with one or more infant children dependent upon him for support, it became incumbent upon Stephen to find himself another housekeeper. This he did, by marrying Sarah Briggs, the orphaned daughter of John Briggs, on the 11th month of the same year his wife Oseah died." "John Briggs came over from England in 1635 when he was twenty years of age. He was named among the first sixty settlers of Sandwich in 1637. On the 14th of the 4th month 1640, in an assignment of meadow lands, John Briggs was given 7 1/2 acres. He died in 1641, in his 26th year, and his widow Catherine is said to have died during the same year. John and Catherine had two children, viz: Samuel and Sarah, the latter of whom was born the same year of her parents' death. The records show that the estate of John Briggs was probated at Plymouth on the 5th day of the 10th month, 1641, and an inventory of his property, showing 55 pounds, 2 shillings, was "exhibited on oath of his widow Catherine, who was apt administratrix. And the said Catherine Briggs doth promise & give unto her two children, two cows, viz.: the younger white cow to her son Samuel, and the brown heifer to her d. Sarah, to be kept for them, and increase of stock to be theirs from this time forward." The name of Briggs was perpetuated in Sandwich by Samuel, son of John. An old record before us says that "Gideon Hoxie lived on the old lot at Spring Hill, near the brook, which he bought of John Briggs. This John Briggs was probably the grandson of Samuel. In 1660, Samuel Briggs was awarded four pounds of powder upon a division of the town's supply. And in January 1682, Samuel Briggs and William Swift, Jr., were appointed supervisors of highways."
And from another source off the internet: ~John Briggs was first mentioned by Governor Bradford in his Plymouth Colony Records when he was deeded, on 16 April 1640, seven and one half acres of land at Sandwich with the original proprietors of the township. On 1 June 1641 at the General Court of Plymouth his widow was granted the adminstration of his estate, Savage considered him to be the john briggs of Lynn who probably came on the"Blessing" in 1635, ae. 20 yr. however, the John Briggs who settled in Newport, R.I., in 1639 may have been the passenger on the "Blessing." +The names of the children of John-1 Briggs are recorded in the inventory taken of his estate by Edward Dillinghame and Thomas Tupper. "And the saId Katherne Briggs Doth prmise and give unto her two children two cowes via' the younger white cowe to her sonne Samuel and the browne heiffthencreases and stock to be theirs from this tyme forward----". The inventory of stock and household goods included, "three melch cowes, 1 heiffer, 1 bullock and two bull calves. +Children of John1 and Katherne () Briggs born in Sandwich: >Samuel >Sarah2 "bridges," md.
