John Breton was baptised on 9th February 1686 at Dinton in Buckinghamshire, son of Lucy Breton, formerly Johnson, and her husband John Breton, who was the vicar of Dinton at the time. Around 1692 the family left Dinton and moved over eighty miles north to Irnham in Lincolnshire, where John's father became the rector. John's mother died in 1705 and was buried at Irnham.

In 1712, aged 26, John was admitted as a sizar student at Magdalene College at Cambridge University. He went on to be ordained a deacon in 1718 and became a curate to his father at Irnham. John's father died in 1721 and was buried at Irnham.

In 1723 John was appointed curate of Granby in Nottinghamshire, about twenty miles north-west of Irnham. He appears to have lived at Granby for the rest of his life.

On 10th July 1730, aged 44, John married Sarah Kirk at Sneinton, near Nottingham. They do not appear to have had any children. Sarah died in 1739 and was buried at Granby.

John married again on 14th October 1741, aged 55, to Elizabeth Bonser, formerly Harrison, a widow from Granby. They married at Kilvington, a few miles north-east of Granby, although both were described as living in Granby at the time.

In 1760, John wrote his will. He provided an income of seven pounds a year for his wife Elizabeth, and made bequests to some of his siblings, nieces and nephews. His nephew George Breton was appointed executor and was the residuary legatee.

John died at the age of 84, and was buried at Granby on 14th November 1770. Elizabeth survived him by seven years.
