John Blennerhassett was the son of Sir Thomas Blennerhassett and Margaret Braham. He married, firstly, Elizabeth Cornwallis, daughter of Sir John Cornwallis He married, secondly, Mary Echingham, daughter of Sir Edward Echingham, in 1523.

He was Freeman and Steward of Norwich, when he donated two silver-gilt tazza cups bearing his arms to the Corporation in 1562. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Norwich in 1571. He lived at Barsham House in Beccles, Suffolk, England; at Boyland Hall, Long Stratton, Norfolk, England; and at Frenze, Norfolk, England.

    Norwich was a borough constituency which was represented in the House of Commons of England from 1298 to 1707, in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800, and in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1801 until it was abolished for the 1950 general election. Consisting of the city of Norwich in Norfolk, it returned two Members of Parliament (MPs), elected by the bloc vote system.
    It was replaced in 1950 by two new single-member constituencies, Norwich North and Norwich South.
