John [Blanchard], b. [Boston] 8 Mar. 1651 [18 Sept. 1652; Hartman missed the fact that his parents had two sons named John in two consecutive years]. John Blanchard had been placed in the care of his grandmother, Ann, and after her death had gone to reside with his uncle John in Chelmsford, where he is recorded to have died of smallpox, 24 July 1678. It was probably this circumstance which influenced Deacon John to refrain from naming any of his own sons after himself and caused this name to drop out of use among his descendants for a generation or two.
