John2 Berry (Thadeus1) was born, probably at Rumney Marsh, about 1663 and died at Middleton, Mass., after 15 March 1734, when he divided his land to his four sons (Essex Deeds, 79:45, 46, 47, 51). He married before 1695 Rachel -----. She was probably the Rachel Leach who was baptized at Salem, Mass., 7 May 1668, daughter of Captain Richard and Sarah Leach (Salem VRs). Proof that John Berry's wife was Rachel Leach is not positive, but is strongly indicated by the will of Richard Leach, dated 17 June 1687, that mentions daughter Rachel. John Berry signed as a witness (Ira J. Patch, "Abstracts from Wills, Inventories, etc. on file in the Office of Clerk of Courts, Salem, Mass." in Essex Institute Historical Collections, IV [1862]:174). Also there are land transactions in Wenham involving the Leaches and John Berry. … Rachel is not a common name and this Rachel Leach is the only Rachel found among any family connected with John Berry of Wenham. Her birth date is very acceptable for a marriage to John Berry.
