    John Barrett, son of Samuel and grandson of William, b. 12 [sic, records say 21] June 1708, d. 9 Sept. 1786, merchant in Boston, and "one of the committee of six, appointed by the merchants of Boston, in 1768, to resist the imposition by Parliament upon the Colonies of the onerous duties on sundry articles of commerce." He was for many years a deacon of the New North Church. His portrait by Copley represents him as dressed in a suit of olive-colored cloth and seated beside a table, his right hand holding a pen and his left hand resting on his knee.
