History of the Town of Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts : From Its First Settlement in 1657 to 1861; with a Brief Sketch, p. 319, speculates that since John, who "probably had no children", "refers to the children of Thomas Barnes as his 'kinsmen', he was probably a brother or cousin". The will of Thomas Barnes explicitly calls John his brother, answering that speculation.
