Family tree▼ Facts and Events
John stated in court testimony for a pension, that he was born in North Carolina. His parents are undocumented at this point. He was drafted for a term, and then enlisted for a 3 month term, in the Revolutionary War. He was discharged near Chesterfield, South Carolina, where he may have met and married a woman named Sletyan, undocumented. Soon after, they moved to Georgia, with his brother, William. William testified to his military service at John's pension hearing. Several children were born to this marriage. John appeared to move around some. Documentation of his life is sketchy. At the time of his pension hearing in 1833, he stated that he had "mostly" lived in Screven County, but the last several years had lived in Decatur County. No records have been found of his activities there. John returned to Screven and lived there the remainder of his life, living several years in the home of Levi Best, unknown relationship. He was buried in Screven County. There is no documentation at this time of where and when his wife died. Later descendents applied for and received a military headstone for Revolutionary Service. A ceremony was held by the DAR and written about in the Sylvania newspaper, when the headstone was placed. The article states the land was owned, at the time, by his brother, Peter Arnett. This has not been documented. References
