DEATH 15 Dec 1888 (aged 40)
Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana, USA
BURIAL: Pioneer Cemetery
Winnemucca, Humboldt County, Nevada, USA
Mr. J. Ambrose, of Garnett, Kan., a brother of the deceased, sends us the following clipping from the Windemuca (Nev.)(should be spelled "Winnemucca" Silver State, of December 17, which tells where and when his death actually occurred.):
Last week Rev. J. C. Ambrose, pastor of the M.E. Church, A.D. Wilcox, J. M. Garrison and his step-son, W. H. Miner, and Chas. Akin left here on a hunting trip to the Jackson Creek Mountains. Last night Willie Miner arrived in town, bringing the sad and startling intelligence that Mr. Ambrose died Saturday night, December 15th, in camp. The gentleman was quite poorly, and had traveled a good deal Saturday night. He ate some supper, complained of feeling tired, and remarking that he would have a good rest next day, meaning Sunday, went to bed and in a few minutes died in a peaceful slumber. His body was brought to Able's wood camp Monday, and will arrive here today.
The news of his death has spread a gloom over the entire community and is heart-rending to his wife and children, whose grief is inconsolable over the irreparable loss of a kind and loving husband and father, and to whom the sympathies of the public are extended.
Mr. Ambrose came here from Catalic (should be Cadillac)
Mich., about the 1st of October last, and assumed the pastorate of the M.E. Church. He was a man of much more than ordinary ability, and was esteemed and respected by all who knew him.
The deceased was a son of Rev. Mathias Ambrose, a U.B. Minister of over 50 years active service in the ministry, who died about five years ago in Logan County, Ill., aged 73. He enlisted in an Ohio regiment at the age of 24 as a drummer boy; was a favorite and idolized by the older boys of his regiment. He carried a musket during part of his service and made a good soldier till mustered out at the close of the war in '65; was a whole-souled G.A.R. man and a member of the Odd Fellows' order. His labors as a minister cover sixteen years of active service. He was a model man and a true Christian. May he rest in peace on the other shore. At the time of his death he was about 41 years of age. (New-Herald, Hillsboro, Ohio, Thurs., Apr.25, 1889, Pg. 8)
