When Rev. Paul Henkel reached Rader's church his shoes had given out, and he was barefooted. He had just money enough to buy leather for shoes, and then found a shoemaker to whom he offered a silver necklace if he would make them for him. The shoemaker, however, made them gratis.
On this journey he came to a poor German with whom he tarried. The old man had a small horse which he insisted Paul must take and use on the trip. To this Paul agreed and resumed the journey on horseback. He soon found he had made a mistake. The horse was not only very small
but very slow. Paul was over six feet tall, and with his long legs could make better time than with the little lazy beast.
When within seven miles of Woodstock he turned the animal into a field and proceeded on foot. His objective point was the house of John Roller, (grandfather of Gen. John E.
Roller, of Harrisonburg). However, he was told that John Wacker was the chief man of the "Pine' church for which he was aiming. He was entertained by Wacker; preached at Pine and Rader's; later went to Roller's; was given a call by these churches to be their pastor, and then started homeward.
