Facts and Events
In Europe the surname is spelled: STOCKHOWE. In America it is: STOCKHOVER. UDO THOERNER states in his book, that Johann Juergen Stockhowe lived as a tenant in the retirement cottage of the Bruning farm in Niewedde 10, directly on the border of the farm settlement of Kalkriese. That would place him about two miles plus, from the Kreyenhagen Estate in Kalkriese. Venne would have been about two miles to the east. At this time, there was a strict social class in the Prince-Bishopric of Osnabrueck, the 600 year old country that was soon to lose it's independence because of Napoleon. The Stockhovers were considered to be in the same social class as the KREYENHAGENS, who apparently were as close to the local Baron, as anyone. How could the son of a "tenant" marry an heir to the "Half Heir" estate of the Kreyenhagens? In "normal times" this would be considered out of the question!
