Jacob served as a private in the War of 1812. He enlisted with Captain McKnight's Company in Terrill's Regiment of the Pennsylvania Militia from July 23 to August 9, 1813. From January 1 to February 8, 1814 with Captain McKnight's Company in Nelson's 137th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Militia. In his pension record he stated: "While serving in the war of 1812 in defence of his Country at Erie there were several British war ships appeared oposite the Town of Erie in Erie County Pennsylvania. and the Militia plased in the boterces in front of Erie on the Lake for her protection." He received bounty land of 40 acres and 120 acres (War of 1812 Records).
