"In the name of God Amen, the fifth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixth three I Casper Kruger of Frederick Co. in the province of Maryland, being well in body and perfect Mind and Memory, thanks be given unto God, therefore, calling unto Mind the Mortality of my Body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament, that is to say that principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul unto the Hands of God that gave it and for my Body, I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian like and Decent Manner at the discretion of my Executor, noting doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty Power of god and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following Manner and Form;

Probate, Frederick County, MD--Will Book 33, page 242. 1 Oct 1765

Note:

Johann Caspar/Casper Krieger, son of Hans Ernst Krieger (citizen and baker in Germany) and his third wife, Catharina Werner, was born 28 July 1702 in Germany. His family apparently were members of the Lutheran Church. It would then appear that Caspar/Casper was a baptized Lutheran.

Johann Caspar/Casper Krieger, weaver and citizen of Klein Gartach, Germany, was married 17 August 1728 at the Schwaigern Lutheran Church in Schwaigern, Germany to Anna Christina/Christinah Hoffarth (h)/Hoffert/Huffort/Hufford, daughter of Hans Jerg Hoffart(H) and Anna Most/Mest/Mast. The marriage record names his father as Ernst Krieger. (Lutheran Marriage Parish Records of Schwaigern, Germany)

On 05 September 1729 Anna Christina gave birth to their first child, Phillip Casper Krieger. Nothing more is known of this son at this time. Within a year's time, it appears that the young Krieger couple with their young son, Phillip Caspar, immigrated to America on the ship, "Thistle" of Glasgow. "Caspar Krieger"was numbered among the 260 persons who arrived in Philadelphia on 29 August 1730 aboard the ship, "Thistle" of Glasgow with Colin Dunlap, master, from Rotterdam, Last from Cowes. [Colonial Records III, p. 283] [Rupp, "Thirty-Thousand Names of Immigrants to Pennsylvania, 1727-1776, p. 63]

It would not have been unusual for the family to travel to America in the company of other family members or to follow other family members to America. We know that Anna Christina's father, Hans Jerg (Aka Jorich, Jorick, Jerg, Yerg, Yerrick) Hoffarth of Schwaigern, as "Jorich Hoffart" with wife and 2 children immigrated 15 September 1729 to America and arrived in Pennsylvania on the ship, "Allen". Hans Jerg Hoffart(h) is noted as being among members of the church who were baptized in Europe and who came to America with Alexander Mack. Alexander Mack is considered to be the founder of the German Baptist Brethren Church and was passenger aboard the ship. "Allen". [Brumbaugh, G. M. "A History of the German Baptist Brethren in Europe and America." p. 61]

Today descendants of this Hoffarth Family are known by these surnames: Hoffarth, Hoffart, Hoffort, Hoffert, Huffert, Hufferd, Hufford, Huford, Herford, etc., and can be found in the early records of Pennsylvania and Maryland. We can probably assume that Casper and Anna Christina joined her parents in Pennsylvania upon their arrival, since at this time it does not appear there were others from the Krieger/Creager family who immigrated.

It was here in Pennsylvania in this new country and surroundings that their next son, Johann Christian Krieger, was born in 1731. No record of his birth or baptism has Been found at this time, so his birth date is based upon other records. Possibly we may find his records present in the files of the German Baptist Brethren Church, if at that time period they were living with or nearby her Hoffart(h) parents. However, we do not know the vicinity where either family was living at the time of Johann Christian's birth, but we can assume that they were at least in Philadelphia County.

Around February, 1734 it appears that the young Casper Creager family may have settled in or near Oley Hills (ada Oley Mtns.), Pennsylvania. This area is believed to have been originally in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania at this early time period. (Philadelphia County was an original county established in 1682). It was here (Philadelphia County) that a land warrant was issued on March 8th of 1734 to Caspar Creager in what is now the Easter part (near Reading) of Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is here that it is said that Casper had accumulated some 225 acres. It was here that George Valentine "Velte" Krieger joined the family when he was born on 09 February 1734 (a month before the land warrant was issued) at the place called "Oley Mountains" in church records. Valentine was baptized by Rev. John Casper Stover in Oley Hills, Pennsylvania on 02 March 1734 with one "John Hoffert" as witness (perhaps father or brother to Anna Christiana). [Pennsylvania Historical Society,Philadelphia, PA.] Valentine is the only child whose birth and baptism can be validated from church records at this time. In Irene (Creager) Lawson's "The Creager History", p. 10, she states 'At the time of Velte's baptism, his father, Casper, was a resident of Oley Hills, Pennsylvania, and was an official at St. Joseph's Church of Hill Church and was one of the three designated to purchase 50 acres of land for a cemetery on August 12, 1747." Irene's history (p. 10) says that "Hill Church" of St. Joseph was known as "The Church among the Oley Hills." This church was located about 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Oley Hills, Pennsylvania also appears to be the place of the other Krieger children's births-1734-1752. Again we find the Hoffart(h)/Hoffert surname connected with the family in America. (Christian Hoffarth is recorded as living at Monocracy Manor, Frederick County, Maryland.)

Today, the city/town of Oley appears to be in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Some say they were born in Berks, Philadelphia county near Reading, PA which later became Montgomery County, PA. Others give the children's birthplace as Oley Hills, New Hanover, Montgomery Co., PA. [Source: Internet, 30 January 2002, Creager-L-: Joe Creager at bjnjoe@@worldnet.att.net says, "Montgomery County should not be used for any reason, at least for Valentine. I don't know about the others for sure, except Philip Caspar, Johann Caspar's oldest son, was born in Germany.] To determine where this place is today, one would have to know the range, township, and section of the land warrants in Philadelphia County, which are unknown at this time.

[Internet, 30 January 2002, CREAGER-yahoogroups:Dana Creager at danasvibe@@hotmail.com] "The fact that there is a Hill Church (in the Oley Hills) located on Hill Church Road just a little over 6 miles NNW of Boyertown, Berks County, Pennsylvania." plus..."the fact that Oley is further west, still in Berks County, convinces me that the correct location is Oley Hills, Berks County, PA." [Internet, 30 January 2002, CREAGER-L..Joe Creager at bjnjoe@@worldnet.att.net]

This is supported by deed warrants and documents issued to one Caspar Krieger (aka Kreiger, Kruger, & Creager). On "8 March 1734" "Casper Creager" purchased "150 acres" in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania". [Pennsylvania Archives-Third Series XXIV, 3rd Series, Warrantees of Land 1730-1898, p. 9]

The following year, another son, Conrad, was born on 09 February 1735. With this birth, Casper and Anna Christina had become the parents of four sons. Again records of his birth and baptism are not to be foune.

On "15 April 1737" "Casper Kruger" purchased "25 acres" in "Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania." [Pennsylvania Archives-Third Series XXIV, 3rd Series, Warrantees of Land 1730-1898, p. 27]

That same year (1737) son, Adam, was born to the couple. Then along came their first daughter, Anna Catharina, on 13 May 1740, and their son, Michael, joined the family in 1742. This birth was followed by yet another recorded land purchase of "25 acres" in "Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania" on 17 November 1744 to Casper Kruger. [Pennsylvania Archives-Third Series XXIV, 3rd Series, Warrantees of Land 1730-1898, p. 27]

Within the next eight years three more sons followed Michael with Heinrich born on 31 December 1746; Georg whose life was apparently cut short was born on 27 September 1747. Casper and his family were devout Lutherans. He is said to have been an official of St. Joseph's Church (Oley Hills Church), and in 1747 he was one of three designated to purchase 50 acres for a church cemetery. Then it appears that "Casper Krieger" sold 25 acres in Pennsylvania on 13 May 1751. [Pennsylvania Archives, p. 28 Philadelphia County-Kreiger, Casper, 25 Acres, 13 May 1751. Another son, also named Georg, joined the family on 12 July 1752. This Georg completed the family as we know it.

Now it is believed that Casper Krieger probably returned sometime in 1752 to his homeland for a visit. If this is true, did he leave his family here in America and travel by himself to the fatherland? And, if true, how long was he there? This record indicates the supposed visit.

                                                          1752
Either the same or another Casper Krieger
                                       arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
on the snow (type of sailing vessel), "Louisa" November 8, 1752,
                                      John Pittcairne, master
                                                    from Rotterdam.

[The PA Historical Society curator expressed the theory that Caspar may have returned to America after a visit to Europe after an abstence of about 2 years in America. Subseequent records tend to substantiate this theory].

By 1754, Casper had apparently uprooted his family, sold his land holdings in Pennsylvania and removed to Frederick County, Maryland where soil is said to have been more fertile and less rocky. Many of his Pennsylvania friends and neighbor's apparently made the exodus with him. Here he purchased land in 1754, 1756, and 1762. )Frederick Co. MD Land Records. E 477, F 91, & H 1). His holdings were located in the Mt. Pleasant area of Frederick County, a little north and a touch east of the town of Frederick. (Source: Internet, 27 November 2003, E-mail to ASH: Dana Creager).

On 05 September 1763, Casper as Casper Kruger wrote his last will and testament. At his demise, he owned more land than land records indicate. It is not known what brought about the death of Casper nor his exact death date. We know he died by 01 October 1765 when the above will was probated. At the time of his death, Casper possessed a considerable amount of property which he passed to his children.

The following record gives us more information concerning the probate of Caspar's will. Frederick County, MD, Vol P, page 493, dated 6 July 1772, and recorded 02 December 1772: At the request of Adam Creager, s/o Caspar Creager, and his will dated 05 September 1763 among his bequests and legacies, bequeathed unto his sons and daughter, namely, Christian, Conrad, Adam, Michael, George, Valentine, Catherine, and Henry....This indenture between Valentine, Conrad, Margaret, Wife of Michael, and Catherine, wife of George.

Casper Kruger, born in 1729, was confirmed and admitted Holy Communion on November 5, 1749, aged 20 years (Confirmation frm Falckner Swamp Lutheran Church (New Hanover), Penna.).

Casper Kruger's will was made on September 5,1763, and it was probated on October 1, 1765, named the following children; Christian, Conrad, Adam, Catharina, Valentine, Michael, Henry and Georg Krieger. The first name of Casper's wife, is also given in his will as Christinah. The Executors were his wife, Christinah, and son, Valentine. Casper Krieger's will is filed in the Frederick County Court House, Frederick Maryland, in Will Bool A Folio 254.

In sever of the land deeds recorded in the Frederick County Court house, Frederick, Maryland, Casper Krieger is listed as a weaver and as a farmer.

In Vol. P, Page 493, dated July 6, 1772, and recorded December 2, 1772, at the request of Adam Creager, Casper Creager, by his will dated September 5, 1763, amoung his bequests and legacies, bequeathed unto his sons and daughter, Namely: Christian, Conrad, Adam, Michael, George, Valentine, Catherine, and Henry......... This indenture between Valentine, Conrad, Michael, and George Creager and Jacob Frout, who intermarried with Catherine Creager, Adam. Wives who relinquished their dower rights were: Christiana, wife of Valentine; Mary, wife of Conrad; Margaret, wife of Michael; and Catharine, wife of George.
