The village of Unterowisheim, was located near Karlsruhe, a resort city located along the east bank of the Rhine River, in the former Kingdom of Baden, and across from the Palatinate, from where many of the Urbana, Indiana pioneers had migrated. The village is now located in the German state of Baden-Wurttemburg.

Johann probably lived all his life in Baden. However, some of his descendants made their way to Wabash County, Indiana.
