  29. recorded on a receipt for $2 in payment for the Register's and Receiver's fees to file a Declaratory Statement for his Homestead claim.
  30. "Michael Gutmuler" recorded on a receipt, dated 6 June 1876 at the Land Office at Springfield in Dakota Territory, for $2 in payment for the Register's and Receiver's fees to file a Declaratory Statement for his Homestead claim. Application No. 1329 filed 8 Oct 1878 at the Land Office at Springfield, Dakota Territory (later Yankton) for the East half of the North East quarter, and the East half of the South East quarter of Section 17, in Township 96 North of Range 60 West of the 5th Prime Meridian, containing 160 acres. The application contains his signature, but his name was recorded as "Michael Guthmuller." An affidavit, dated 8 Oct 1878, is also signed by Michael with his name recorded as "Michael Guthmüller." Payment of $14 for the land entry was received the same day. His signature is also on a page with the following statement: "I hereby transmitt all my preemption filing to a Homestead Entry."
The Supreme Court of Dakota Territory issued his Naturalization Final Papers on 14 Oct 1881 granting him his citizenship. The document records his name as Michael Goodmiller.
Michael Guthmiller of Scotland, Dakota signed a document at the Land Office at Yankton on 15 Oct 1881 stating his intention to make final proof to establish his claim on Wednesday, 23 Nov 1881. The Proof Notice was published for five consecutive weeks in the Dakota Citizen, a weekly newspaper published at Scotland, D.T. The notice was first published 20 Oct 1881, and last on 17 Nov 1881.
His signature appears on three documents dated 23 Nov 1881. The first is a statement declaring that he writes his name as Michael Guthmiller, and that is the way he wished his name to appear on the patent. His name appeared as "Michael Guthmuller" on the receipt for his entry fee. He further stated that he was the same person to whom was issued the final certificate of Naturalization in which his name was written as "Michael Goodmiller." The second document with his signature is a Final Affidavit made before the Clerk of Court for Bon Homme County, D.T. because of the great distance from the local land office. The document indicates that the homestead entry was made at "Springfield now Yankton DT." On the affidavit he states that he had resided on his claim since 10 Jul 1876. The third document which he signed that day was his Homestead Proof Testimony. Similar documents were signed by his two witnesses, Jakob Ehresmann and John Büchler (aka Johann Bueschler). In his testimony as claimant, Michael testified that he was 65 years old, and his post office address was Tyndall, Bon Homme County, Dakota Territory and that he was a naturalized citizen of the United States. He further testified that he and his wife and six children had lived continuously on the land since establishing residence thereon. He testified that the house was built 25 Jun 1876 and residence established 10 Jul 1876. Improvements consisted of a house 19X55 ft, a stable 15X19 ft, a stable 19X20 ft, and 60 acres under cultivation; total value $500. He had cultivated 60 acres and raised crops for five seasons. The testimony of the witnesses added that the house and stables were of stone. Michael paid the $4 balance due for the land entry.
Final Certificate No. 1767, dated 26 Nov 1881, was approved 23 May 1882; patented 25 Jul 1882 and recorded, Vol. 4, page 276 at the Yankton Land Office.
