Killed by Lightning
Mr. Peter C. Bender, postmaster at Hassan in Orange township, was killed by lightning last Tuesday morning. Mr. Bender had been threshing Monday and had not finished, and the next morning had risen between four and five o’clock, and after attending to a few chores, told his wife that he would to after the cows. Shortly after, a vivid flash of lightning and a loud clap of thunder caused Mrs. B. to go to the door, fearing the barn had been struck. Mr. Bender not making his appearance, she took the buckets and started to look for him, finding him lying in the lane about ten rods from the barn. She went to him and found him lying on his back and still warm, but lifeless. The last cow of the lot he was driving lay about twelve feet ahead of him dead, but without a mark on her to show what had killed her. An examination showed that the fatal bolt had struck Mr. Bender on the left temple, leaving a slight leaving a slight mark, burning the hair, and also whiskers, passing down the breast, dividing and passing out the left side of the right foot and on the same side of the left foot. Satisfying herself that the vital spark had fled, Mrs. B. gave the alarm and the body was carried to the house, and relatives telegraphed for.
The funeral, which was largely attended, took place at the Hassan cemetery in Van Buren township. Finding it impossible to find even standing room for the people at the church, the sermon was preached at the cemetery by Rev. Z. B. Campbell of Ada.
Mr. Bender was in his 56th year, and leaves a wife and married daughter to mourn his loss. He was one of the kindest and most genial men we have ever known. He was highly respected by all who knew him; and his sudden death will bring sorrow to many hearts. His bereaved family have our earnest sympathy.
Six years ago the lightning struck within ten feet of the same place, doing no damage except to shatter the fence. There is a very wet place at that point, which appears to draw the electric current.
